Last checked: 26 October 2026. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has opened online examination-form submission for eligible Class 10 private candidates for the 2026–27 examination session. The official notice dated 7 October 2026 lists the regular-fee window as 8–23 October 2026 and the late-fee window as 24–30 October 2026. That means candidates checking this guide on 26 October have only the remaining late-fee period to work with. Do not wait until the last day.
The notice says the relevant private-candidate examinations will be held in February, March and April 2027, alongside the Board's Main Examinations 2026–27. The exact subject and candidate instructions should be checked in the official notice and portal before payment.
Important: This article is about Class 10 private candidates. Class 12 has a separate CBSE notice and fee schedule. Use the notice for your own class and category rather than assuming that all details are identical.

Who can apply as a Class 10 private candidate?
The CBSE notice identifies specific categories for the 2027 examination. These include:
- Candidates from the 2025–26 session who were declared Essential Repeat in the 2026 examination result.
- Candidates from the 2025–26 session placed in Compartment in the Board's Main or Supplementary Examinations 2026, described in the notice as second-chance compartment candidates.
- Candidates declared Fail/Essential Repeat in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026.
- Candidates who passed out in 2026 and wish to improve performance in one or more subjects.
This list should not be treated as blanket eligibility for every student who is not attending a regular school. Your prior result, examination year, category and subject choices matter. Read Annexure 1 (eligibility criteria) in the official notice. If your situation does not clearly match a listed category, ask CBSE through its official regional-office route before submitting a form or paying a fee.
How to apply online
CBSE directs private candidates to use the Private Candidate link on the Board website. The official page includes an online application entry for Main Examination 2027.
- Open the CBSE Private Candidate page directly.
- Choose the Main Examination 2027 application link and select the correct class and candidate category.
- Read the eligibility and application instructions before entering details. Do not select a category merely because it sounds similar to your result status.
- Enter the required candidate details. The notice says information for students who appeared in the Board examinations in 2026 may be auto-generated in the online system. Candidates from 2025 and earlier must provide details such as roll number and year of passing; those details must be accurate.
- Review personal details, previous examination information, category, subjects and examination-centre city before submitting.
- Upload the photograph and any documents requested by the portal, following the official instructions for file type, size and format.
- Pay the applicable fee online through the payment modes available on the portal.
- Save the final application confirmation, payment receipt and any generated reference number. Reopen the submitted form, if the portal allows it, to verify that the submission and payment are recorded.
The notice states that applications and fees are accepted online only. It also says no application is accepted after the last date or without fee, and offline payment methods such as demand draft, postal order, money order or cheque are not accepted. A payment attempt is not the same as a successful submission: confirm that the portal records the transaction.
Fee information: what candidates should verify
The fee schedule is in Annexure 4 of the official Class 10 notice. It lists a normal fee of ₹320 per subject per candidate for additional subjects for candidates in India, and a late fee of ₹2,000 per candidate in addition to the normal fee. The same table lists different rates for Nepal and other countries. Because the notice's fee table refers specifically to additional subjects and applicants may fall into different categories, do not use a general article as a substitute for the exact amount displayed for your case in the official portal.
Before paying:
- Confirm the class, category and subject combination.
- Check the fee amount generated by the official application portal.
- Use an online payment method accepted by CBSE.
- Save the transaction reference and receipt.
- If money is debited but the portal does not show payment, follow the portal's official payment-support instructions and keep the bank reference number.
Do not pay an agent who promises to submit the form outside the official process. CBSE's notice explicitly rules out offline submission and payment.
Choosing subjects and examination-centre city
Read the subject list in Annexure 5 and the current Class 10 curriculum before finalizing subjects. The official notice states that the examination for the listed private-candidate categories will be based on the syllabus published for 2026–27. Use the CBSE Academic curriculum page linked above, not a random coaching summary or a syllabus from an earlier session.
The notice warns candidates to choose the examination-centre city carefully: the city chosen in the online form will not be changed once allotted, and an undertaking to this effect is required while filling the application. Before submitting, check travel feasibility and confirm that the city selected is the one you intend. Do not assume that the system will permit a correction later.
Photograph, records and common form errors
Follow the current portal instructions for the photograph and any supporting document. The official notice warns that incorrect entries, false statements or false documents can lead to rejection and may result in the fee being forfeited. Candidates whose details are not auto-generated should carefully cross-check the roll number and year of passing against their original marksheet or previous examination record.
Common errors include choosing the wrong result category, typing an incorrect roll number, selecting the wrong subject, uploading a photograph in the wrong format, paying but not confirming the status, and assuming the fee window has been extended. Check every field before final submission and keep a copy of the completed application.
What should you do now? A short checklist
Because the regular-fee window ended on 23 October and the late-fee window ends on 30 October, eligible candidates should act promptly:
- Read the official notice and eligibility annexure.
- Confirm the category shown by your 2026 result or earlier record.
- Check the subject list and 2026–27 syllabus.
- Keep roll number, year of passing and required documents ready.
- Verify the examination-centre city before submission.
- Pay through the official portal and save proof of payment.
- Check the portal for a successful final submission before the late-fee window closes.
If the form page is unavailable or a payment status is unclear, use the contact details and support instructions published by CBSE. Avoid relying on unverified claims that the deadline has been extended.
