What CBSE announced on 29 October 2026
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued Circular No. Acad-70/2026, dated 29 October 2026, clarifying the Scheme of Studies for students currently in Class IX during the 2026–27 academic session. These students will move to Class X in 2027–28.
The circular is important because it explains which curricular areas will not apply to this batch and how students must complete the compulsory Vocational Education component. It also clarifies the assessment routes that will matter when this group reaches the Class X Board Examination.
The first point to check is the affected batch. These changes are for Class IX students in 2026–27 who progress to Class X in 2027–28. Students who are already in Class X during 2026–27 continue under the existing scheme for their batch.

CBSE Class IX Scheme of Studies 2026–27: Key Details
| Particular | Details |
|---|---|
| Board | Central Board of Secondary Education |
| Circular number | Acad-70/2026 |
| Circular date | 29 October 2026 |
| Affected students | Class IX in 2026–27 |
| Next class | Class X in 2027–28 |
| Main clarification | Interdisciplinary area and vocational education assessment |
| Vocational choice | Kaushal Vikas or one of 22 notified Skill Subjects |
The circular should be read along with the Class IX and X curriculum documents for 2026–27. Schools should also use the annexed assessment tables and FAQs rather than relying only on short summaries.
Which subjects and modules are not part of this batch's curriculum?
CBSE has clarified that the following will not form part of the curriculum for the affected group:
- Individuals in Society in Class IX during 2026–27.
- Modules of Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence (CT & AI) in Class IX during 2026–27.
- Environmental Education in Class X during 2027–28.
The Board says this clarification aligns the introduction of the interdisciplinary curricular area with its implementation schedule.
This should not be interpreted as a permanent removal of these areas for every future CBSE batch. The circular identifies the specific cohort to which the clarification applies. Students and parents should check the curriculum and notices applicable to their own academic session.
Which students are affected?
The distinction between the two batches is essential.
| Student's current class in 2026–27 | What applies |
|---|---|
| Class IX | The clarified scheme applies; this batch moves to Class X in 2027–28 |
| Class X | The existing scheme for the 2026–27 Class X batch continues |
A student currently in Class X should not change subjects based on a circular intended for the Class IX batch. Likewise, a Class IX student should ask the school to explain how the revised subject and assessment structure will be recorded.
Vocational Education remains compulsory
Vocational Education remains a compulsory curricular component for the affected Class IX batch. CBSE provides two routes to meet this requirement:
- Kaushal Vikas: assessed through school-based internal assessment.
- One of the 22 Skill Subjects: assessed through a CBSE Board Examination in Class X in 2027–28.
The two choices are not identical. A student and parent should understand the assessment method and the subject-replacement rules before confirming the option with the school.
The 22 notified Skill Subjects
The circular's annexure lists these Skill Subjects:
| Subject code | Skill Subject |
|---|---|
| 401 | Retail |
| 402 | Information Technology |
| 403 | Security |
| 404 | Automotive |
| 405 | Introduction to Financial Markets |
| 406 | Introduction to Tourism |
| 407 | Beauty & Wellness |
| 408 | Agriculture |
| 409 | Food Production |
| 410 | Front Office Operations |
| 411 | Banking & Insurance |
| 412 | Marketing & Sales |
| 413 | Health Care |
| 414 | Apparel |
| 415 | Multi Media |
| 416 | Multi Skill Foundation Course |
| 417 | Artificial Intelligence |
| 418 | Physical Activity Trainer |
| 419 | Data Science |
| 420 | Electronics and Hardware |
| 421 | Foundation Skills for Sciences (Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology) |
| 422 | Design Thinking and Innovation |
The list does not mean every school offers every subject. Students should confirm which subjects their own school is equipped and approved to offer. For example, Artificial Intelligence (417) and Data Science (419) are listed options, but availability must be checked with the school.
Kaushal Vikas or a Skill Subject: understand the difference
| Point | Kaushal Vikas | One of the 22 Skill Subjects |
|---|---|---|
| Assessment route | School-based internal assessment | CBSE Board Examination in Class X |
| Board paper in Class X | No Board paper for Kaushal Vikas | Yes |
| School certificate | Issued under the prescribed school assessment rules | Board result and applicable certificate provisions |
| Subject replacement benefit | Not available under the skill-subject replacement rule | May replace one failed subject among Mathematics, Science or Social Science, subject to CBSE conditions |
The replacement provision is particularly important. Under the conditions described in CBSE's FAQ, a student who chooses a notified Skill Subject and passes it may use it to replace one failed subject among Mathematics, Science or Social Science when the Class X result is calculated. This benefit does not apply to a student who chooses Kaushal Vikas.
This is not a reason to choose a subject without considering interest, aptitude and school facilities. A Skill Subject brings an additional Board paper and requires preparation in that subject. Kaushal Vikas follows a school-based assessment route. Families should read the full circular and discuss the practical implications with the school.
Which subjects will have Board examinations in Class X (2027–28)?
For the affected batch, the five core Board-exam subjects are:
- Language R1
- Language R2
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Science
Additional Board papers may apply depending on the student's choices, including an optional subject, Mathematics Advanced, Science Advanced or a Skill Subject. Language R3, Art Education and Physical Education & Well-being are assessed through school-based internal assessment under the prescribed scheme. Kaushal Vikas, if selected, is also school-assessed.
CBSE's circular and FAQs set out the assessment details and conditions. Students should not assume that every subject listed in the Class IX curriculum has the same Class X Board-examination format.
Passing criteria and subject replacement
For the five core Class X Board subjects, the minimum requirement is 33% in each subject, calculated by combining the Board Examination and Internal Assessment marks, subject to the applicable rules.
The circular also describes replacement provisions:
- A passed Skill Subject may replace one failed subject among Mathematics, Science or Social Science, under the specified conditions.
- An additional optional language may replace a failed R1 or R2 language, if the prescribed conditions are met.
- The Skill Subject replacement benefit is not available to students who choose Kaushal Vikas.
Because these provisions affect the final result, parents should use the official FAQ and ask the school to explain the subject combination before the school's records are finalised.
What students and parents should do now
- Confirm the batch: Check that the student is in Class IX in the 2026–27 academic session.
- Read Circular Acad-70/2026: Use the official PDF, including the annexures and FAQs.
- Confirm school availability: Ask which of the 22 Skill Subjects are actually offered.
- Compare the two vocational routes: Understand school-based assessment versus a Class X Board paper.
- Review language choices: Ensure R1, R2, R3 and any optional language meet the Board's conditions.
- Keep written confirmation: Retain the school's subject-selection record and any communication about the chosen vocational option.
- Use the correct curriculum: Download the current Class IX curriculum from CBSE Academic, not an older session's PDF.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the circular applies to the current Class X batch.
- Treating the three listed curricular areas as permanently removed for all future years.
- Assuming all 22 Skill Subjects are available in every school.
- Choosing Kaushal Vikas without understanding that the skill-subject replacement benefit does not apply to it.
- Assuming a Skill Subject is only an internal assessment; it has a Class X Board Examination.
- Relying on social media summaries instead of the circular's annexures and FAQs.
