The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is open for the 2026–27 academic year, and several scholarship schemes currently show 31 October 2026 as the student application deadline. As of 24 October 2026, students should check their own scheme page immediately: deadlines and whether a scheme is accepting fresh or renewal applications are scheme-specific.

The official NSP student announcements specifically say that renewal applications are open for the PM-USP Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students (CSSS) and the PM-USP Special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, with student applications closing on 31 October 2026. The portal’s scheme list also shows 31 October deadlines for several other schemes. Do not assume that every scholarship on NSP has the same deadline or that every scheme is open for fresh applications.

Official starting points: NSP Student Portal, NSP scheme list, and the Ministry of Education.

Which scholarships should students check first?

The current NSP scheme list includes a range of central-sector, welfare-based and merit-based schemes. Examples shown with a 31 October 2026 student deadline include the following; availability and fresh-versus-renewal status must be checked on the individual listing:

  • PM-USP CSSS: the current announcement refers to renewal applications for college and university students.
  • PM-USP Special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh: the current announcement refers to renewal applications.
  • National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST Students: check the scheme page for its eligibility and application type.
  • AICTE Swanath Scholarship: check the technical-degree or other applicable scheme details shown on NSP.
  • PM YASASVI schemes: school and college schemes have separate eligibility conditions; select the exact scheme that matches your course and category.
  • Other ministry and AICTE schemes: NSP lists several schemes with their own specifications and timelines.

This is a shortlist, not a guarantee of eligibility. A student should not choose a scheme merely because its deadline is close. Eligibility may depend on the course, institution, category, family circumstances, academic record and other conditions in the official scheme rules.

Is One Time Registration (OTR) required?

Yes. NSP says that One Time Registration (OTR) is required to apply for scholarships. The portal describes OTR as a unique 14-digit number issued on the basis of Aadhaar or an Aadhaar Enrolment ID and applicable throughout a student’s academic career. Keep the OTR details safe and use the official NSP route to register or sign in.

If you already have an OTR, do not create a second registration simply because you are applying for a different scholarship. Sign in with the existing OTR and check the application options available to your account. If your Aadhaar or enrolment details do not match, use the official help and correction instructions rather than guessing at data or using an unofficial agent.

How to apply for an NSP scholarship

1. Open the official portal

Go directly to scholarships.gov.in. Avoid sponsored search results, unofficial “direct apply” pages and social-media links that ask for your password or OTP.

2. Complete OTR or sign in

Generate your OTR if you do not already have one, then sign in using the official process. Keep your login credentials private. Do not share an OTP with anyone claiming that they can guarantee a scholarship.

3. Find the exact scheme

Use the portal’s scheme list and eligibility section. Read the scheme’s specifications and FAQ, including whether it is for fresh applicants or renewals. The 31 October deadline is not proof that a scheme is open to every student.

4. Prepare the required information

The exact document list differs by scheme. Before starting, keep the information requested by the scheme available, such as your academic details, institution/course information, identity details, bank details where required, and category or disability documentation if applicable. Treat this as a preparation checklist, not a universal mandatory-document list; follow the scheme’s official instructions.

5. Complete every required field carefully

Enter your name, date of birth, institution, course, academic year and other details exactly as required by the official records. Review the preview before final submission. If the portal flags a mismatch, resolve it through the relevant official channel instead of submitting contradictory information.

6. Submit and save the acknowledgement

After submission, save or download the confirmation and note the application/reference number. A filled-in form is not necessarily a submitted application. Check that the portal shows the final submission status.

7. Monitor verification and corrections

The portal lists separate verification stages, including institute and nodal-level verification for relevant schemes. Log in regularly. If an application is marked defective, read the exact reason and correct only the fields or documents requested. Do not assume that submission alone means approval or payment.

What if the deadline is 31 October and your application is incomplete?

Prioritise the official scheme instructions and complete the application as early as possible. Check that OTR is working, confirm the correct fresh/renewal option, review the scheme’s eligibility and ensure the final submission is recorded. If a technical problem blocks submission, use the official portal’s help/contact options and keep a record of the issue. A screenshot or support request does not itself extend a deadline, so do not rely on an extension unless NSP or the responsible ministry officially announces one.

If the student deadline passes, continue checking the official scheme page for any formal notice, but do not assume late applications will be accepted. You may need to wait for a future cycle or explore another scheme whose rules fit your circumstances.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying under the wrong scheme or confusing a fresh application with a renewal.
  • Assuming the 31 October deadline applies to every scholarship on NSP.
  • Waiting until the final hours to generate OTR or resolve an identity mismatch.
  • Leaving the form saved but not finally submitted.
  • Ignoring institute verification or a “defective” status after submission.
  • Entering bank or academic details without checking the official records.
  • Paying an unofficial intermediary who promises approval or a guaranteed scholarship.
  • Treating an application acknowledgement as confirmation that the scholarship has been sanctioned.

Before you close the application window

Use this final checklist: (1) confirm the exact scheme and academic year; (2) check fresh/renewal status; (3) confirm OTR; (4) read the current eligibility rules; (5) complete all required fields; (6) submit and save the acknowledgement; and (7) monitor verification status after submission. Keep checking the official NSP portal for changes because dates can vary by scheme.

The safest source for a deadline is the scheme page on NSP itself. If a coaching website, social post or message gives a different date, compare it with the official listing before acting.
