The Ministry of Education has extended the application deadline for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) 2026-27. Eligible students can now submit fresh or renewal applications through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) until November 15, 2026.
The extension gives students additional time to complete their applications and allows the authorities to verify submitted forms within the revised schedule. Students who have already applied should also check their application status and ensure that their institute and district-level verification is completed on time.
NMMSS 2026-27: Important Dates
The Ministry of Education announced the revised schedule on October 31, 2026. The updated dates are:
| Event | Revised last date |
|---|---|
| Student application submission | November 15, 2026 |
| Institute Nodal Officer (L1) verification | November 30, 2026 |
| District Nodal Officer (L2) verification | December 15, 2026 |
The National Scholarship Portal has been accepting applications for the 2026-27 academic year since June 1, 2026. Students must complete their One-Time Registration (OTR) on NSP before submitting the scholarship application.
According to the Ministry, as of October 30, 2026, the portal had received 90,483 fresh applications and 1,99,531 renewal applications under the scheme.
What Is the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme?
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme is a Central Sector scholarship programme implemented by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education.
The scheme aims to support meritorious students from economically weaker families and reduce the number of students who leave school after Class 8 due to financial difficulties. It encourages selected students to continue their education from Class 9 through Class 12.
Under the scheme, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded every year to eligible Class 9 students who qualify in the selection examination conducted by their respective State or Union Territory governments. The scholarship can subsequently be renewed for Classes 10, 11 and 12, subject to the prescribed academic and other conditions.
NMMSS Scholarship Amount
Selected students receive ₹12,000 per year under the scheme. The amount is transferred directly to the beneficiary's bank account through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
The scholarship is intended to support students during their secondary and higher-secondary education. Renewal for the next classes is subject to the scheme's applicable requirements.
NMMSS 2026-27 Eligibility Criteria
Students should check the official scheme guidelines and the requirements displayed on NSP before applying. The key eligibility conditions highlighted by the Ministry include:
- School type: The student should be studying in a State Government school, Government-aided school, or a school managed by a local body.
- Class VII marks: For appearing in the selection test, the student must have secured at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in Class VII.
- Relaxation: A 5-percentage-point relaxation in the Class VII marks requirement is available to SC and ST students.
- Family income: The annual income of the student's parents from all sources should not exceed ₹3.50 lakh.
- Fresh scholarship: Fresh scholarships are awarded to eligible students entering Class 9 after qualifying in the selection examination conducted by the concerned State or UT.
- Renewal: Existing scholarship beneficiaries may apply for renewal in Classes 10 to 12, subject to the prescribed academic and scheme conditions.
Meeting the basic conditions does not by itself guarantee selection. Fresh applicants must also qualify through the relevant State/UT selection process.
How to Apply for the NMMSS Scholarship 2026-27
Eligible students can submit their applications online through the National Scholarship Portal. Follow these steps:
- Visit the official National Scholarship Portal: https://scholarships.gov.in/.
- Complete the required One-Time Registration (OTR) if you have not registered already.
- Log in to the portal using the required registration and login details.
- Find the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme under the available schemes.
- Select the appropriate application type — fresh or renewal --- according to your eligibility.
- Enter the required personal, academic, school and bank account details.
- Upload or provide the documents and information requested by the portal.
- Review the application carefully and submit it.
- Save the application or acknowledgement details and track its verification status.
Applicants should use their own correct details and ensure that their bank and academic information matches the relevant records. The documents required may depend on the applicant's category, State/UT and the information requested by NSP.
What Should Students Do After Submitting the Form?
Submitting the online form is not the final step. Applications must pass the required verification stages.
- Ask the school or Institute Nodal Officer to complete Level 1 (L1) verification by November 30, 2026.
- Check that the District Nodal Officer completes Level 2 (L2) verification by December 15, 2026.
- Regularly check the application status on NSP and respond promptly if any correction or additional information is requested.
Students who have already submitted their applications should not submit another form unnecessarily. They should first check the status of the existing application and contact their school if verification is pending.
Important Advice for Applicants
The extended deadline is November 15, 2026. Students are advised not to wait until the final day, as incomplete details, document issues or portal-related delays may affect timely submission.
Fresh applicants should confirm that they have qualified in the applicable State/UT selection process. Renewal applicants should check that they are using the correct renewal option and meet the continuation requirements.
For the latest application status, scheme details and portal instructions, students should rely on the official National Scholarship Portal and announcements from their State/UT education authorities.
