Introduction of AC Local Train Service

For the first time, an air-conditioned (AC) local train service has been introduced on the Chennai Central-Arakkonam route. This new service is part of the Chennai Suburban Railway network and aims to provide a more comfortable travel option for commuters. The Southern Railway zone, which operates the suburban network, has launched this service following the success of a similar service on the Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu section.

Service Details and Schedule

The AC local train service on the Chennai Central-Arakkonam section will run on a trial basis from October 23 to December 24, 2026. It will operate five days a week, from Monday to Friday, and will not be available on weekends. The service includes three pairs of AC EMU trains running across different routes: Chennai Central-Avadi, Chennai Central-Arakkonam, and Avadi-Arakkonam. The schedule features six services daily, with two designated as fast services.

Features and Benefits

The AC local train is designed with modern amenities to enhance passenger comfort. It includes features like automatic sliding doors, sealed gangways, stainless steel seating, panoramic wide glass windows, and GPS-based LED displays. Additionally, the train is equipped with CCTV surveillance and a passenger talk-back system for emergencies. Energy-efficient regenerative electro-pneumatic brakes and air spring suspension are also part of the design, contributing to a smoother and more sustainable travel experience.
